Dame Whina Cooper

Dame Whina Cooper

We asked Kiwis to name our Tunnel Boring Machine after a ground-breaking New Zealand woman. Dame Whina Cooper's name was one of three shortlisted from thousands of entries. Hundreds of Kiwis then cast votes for their favourite and Dame Whina Cooper was chosen as the winner.

Dame Whina Cooper fought to improve living conditions for Māori in urban areas, against racial discrimination in housing, education and employment, and championed women, children and Māori land rights.

Dame Whina Cooper will be commemorated through iconography on the TBM.
